CHFA is proud to announce its Round One 2024 Direct Effect Award recipients.

CHFA’s Direct Effect Awards recognize Colorado nonprofit organizations whose missions align with CHFA’s work to strengthen Colorado by investing in affordable housing and community development.

CHFA is donating $1,362,000 to 104 nonprofits through its Direct Effect program in round one, which received 196 applications seeking more than $4.6 million in combined funding.

CHFA is not a state agency and does not receive any direct state or federal appropriations. CHFA is a self-sufficient, quasi-governmental organization serving Colorado. The Direct Effect Awards are funded by directing a portion of CHFA’s program investments and earnings to provide philanthropic support and strengthen the capacity of mission-aligned nonprofits.

This year, CHFA is celebrating 50 years of strengthening Colorado. To commemorate, up to an additional five $50,000 awards will be given during each of the two Direct Effect Awards rounds in 2024 to applications demonstrating an exceptional alignment with CHFA’s mission. Advocates of Lake County – $50,000

Advocates of Lake County provides trauma-informed services and promotes a community where individuals experiencing violence or housing insecurity may achieve personal autonomy. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will provide general operating support for The Bridge-Leadville, which offers emergency and transitional support to individuals who are homeless or otherwise housing insecure, and otherwise have incomes below 30 percent Area Median Income. CrossPurpose – $50,000

CrossPurpose abolishes economic, relational, and spiritual poverty through career and community development. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support their tuition-free Leader program, which provides job training for employment, and their Legacy program, a wealth-building program for Leader alumni that explores financial wellness principles, career and education advancement, and steps toward investing and homeownership. Diakonia – $50,000

Diakonia’s mission is to provide needs-based programs and services that equip at-risk youth for a successful transition into adulthood. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support the Vocational Training program, which provides Home Builders Institute: Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training. Hilltop Community Resources – $50,000

Hilltop Community Resources provides critical support and services that directly impact affordable housing access and economic development for clients in Mesa, Montrose, Delta, and Ouray counties. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support Latimer House, a community-based intimate partner violence and sexual assault response program serving Mesa, Montrose, Delta, and Ouray counties. Kids First Health Care – $50,000

Kids First Health Care improves the health and wellbeing of all children, regardless of their circumstances, through access to high quality health care. They serve infants, children, and youth in Adams County, regardless of their insurance status or a family’s ability to pay for care. 5 Loaves Pantry’s mission is to provide a food source for those experiencing food insecurity, in McClave, Hasty, and the surrounding communities. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support Healthy Harvest 2024, allowing 5 Loaves Pantry to purchase locally grown fresh produce, honey, and sunflower oil from local producers in lower Arkansas Valley. A Precious Child’s mission is to provide children in need with opportunities and resources to empower them to achieve their full potential. African Chamber of Commerce Colorado USA creates economic growth and investment by empowering the African business community of Colorado. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support the Business Recovery program, which helps start-ups and existing businesses continue their post-pandemic path to recovery and growth through access to technical assistance, training, business networking opportunities, and referrals to lenders and other business development resources. Archway Communities elevates lives by providing access to affordable housing, food security, and the supportive services people need to thrive. Ascending to Health Respite Care – $15,000

Ascending to Health Respite Care’s mission is to help break the cycle of homelessness through quality healthcare, sheltering, and case management. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support the cost of recuperative bed days, which provide step-down medical care for homeless individuals discharging from hospital visits who are too well to remain hospitalized, but who are too fragile to be released to the street/shelter to care for themselves. Aspire 3D provides residents of the Loveland Housing Authority with individualized support that promotes increased well-being, independence, and economic security. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will provide Loveland’s families, veterans, and older adults living in low- to moderate-income communities access to supportive services for individualized success. Aurora Economic Opportunity Coalition – $10,000

Aurora Economic Opportunity Coalition strives to promote long-term wealth building within the historically underserved community of northwest Aurora by providing professionals and businesses access to a comprehensive network of valuable resources. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will help to expand services benefiting underserved residents through shelter, food access, transportation, job connections, protection against wage theft, and health/mental health services. Boulder County AIDS Project – $15,000

Boulder County AIDS Project’s mission is to provide support, advocacy, and education to those who are living with or affected by HIV, and to serve as an outreach and information center to prevent the further transmission of HIV. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will provide housing assistance services for low-income people living with HIV in Boulder, Broomfield, Gilpin, and Clear Creek counties. Boulder Food Rescue – $10,000

Boulder Food Rescue aims to create a more just and less wasteful food system. They facilitate the sustainable redistribution of nutritious food that would otherwise be wasted to low-income communities, working with communities to facilitate their own food redistribution and create decentralized systems to bypass barriers to food access. Boulder Housing Partners Foundation's mission is to help its residents by mobilizing resources for supportive, life-enriching, and community building services. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support staffing for the Bringing School Home Early Childhood program, which fosters partnerships with residents and local organizations to increase opportunities and strengthen the broader community. Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. Bright Future Foundation for Eagle County’s mission is to transform lives affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human-trafficking. Broomfield FISH’s mission is to meet their neighbors’ basic human needs and provide them with hope and tools to rise out of poverty. They are a food and family resource center, and have been working to address housing instability, homelessness, and food security for more than 60 years. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will help to ensure that the most underserved populations in Broomfield have equitable access to fresh, healthy foods. Brothers Redevelopment – $15,000

Brothers Redevelopment’s mission is to provide a range of housing solutions for low-income community members, older adults, and people living with disabilities across Colorado. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support the Home Modification and Repair and Paint-A-Thon programs, which provide repairs and modifications for low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners who are unable to pay contractors for these services. Business Incubator Center’s mission is to diversify the economy and cultivate ecosystems that empower entrepreneurship and small businesses. Careers in Construction Colorado’s mission is to partner with entities that provide educational courses focused on the construction industry to promote the benefits of career opportunities to students, parents, influencers, and educators, as well as develop effective job-placement platforms. Chaffee Housing Trust’s mission is to promote responsible community development by providing affordable and sustainable homeownership and rentals to qualifying residents. College Access Navigators is a youth-centered, grassroots organization that co-creates bright futures with youth through mentoring and leadership development. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support the Mentor Fellowship Program, which pairs college-age near-peer mentors with mentees to provide essential support and guidance in navigating the education system and preparing for their future careers. Colorado Futuretek – $5,000

Colorado Futuretek’s mission is to provide enrichment training and resources to help African American and other underrepresented minority youth obtain marketable skills in the IT and computer industries and support them in developing interpersonal and entrepreneurial skills. They also work to elevate senior citizens by providing basic computer and smartphone training and assistance to increase their knowledge and comfort with technology. Colorado Homeownership Coalition – $20,000

The Colorado Homeownership Coalition aims to stabilize families, neighborhoods, and communities across Colorado through sustainable homeownership. They support individuals and families experiencing financial instability to allow them to achieve their potential. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support the Mortgage Assistance program, which creates a temporary bridge via grant funds to help stabilize a temporary financial situation and avoid consequences of ongoing housing expense delinquency and foreclosure. Colorado Immigrant Justice Fund provides legal education and resources for asylum seekers to help them obtain freedom, independence, and a pathway to becoming contributing members of society in the United States. Community Food Bank provides a short-term supply of nutritious food, and access to available hunger relief resources, to any Mesa County community member experiencing need. Extreme Community Makeover coordinates volunteer teams to partner with Denver residents to improve their own homes and neighborhoods. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support the Adopt-a-Block program, which cultivates community among residents, neighborhoods, and networks of local resource providers, and connects residents to a permanent path towards healthy, hopeful, and stable lives. Focus Points Family Resource Center’s mission is to build better communities by strengthening families in Globeville and Elyria-Swansea, Montbello, Commerce City, and Aurora. Foster Alumni Mentors (FAM) creates a community of belonging and a network of support for those who have experienced foster care. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will help enhance supportive housing services. Fremont County Economic Development Corporation is a professional economic development organization focused directly on business attraction, retention and expansion. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will help them launch TradeSTART, an initiative aiming to address three critical issues: the housing shortage, lack of skilled workers, and limited economic opportunities in Fremont County, with a primary focus on serving economically distressed and underserved individuals. Fresh Food Connect’s mission is to grow a more local and resilient food system by connecting gardeners with their communities. The Gathering Place (TGP) is a community of safety and hope where positive relationships, choice, and essential resources transform lives. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will help provide low-barrier resource navigation, wellness programs, and housing-focused case management to help more than 100 unhoused people move to permanent housing annually and will support hundreds more in gaining long-term stability and security. GoFarm’s mission is to train and support local farmers, connect communities with local agriculture, and increase equitable access to nutrient-rich food grown in Colorado. Grand Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life in Grand County by proactively addressing current and future needs in the areas of health and human services, arts and culture, education, sports and recreation, and environment. Hands of the Carpenter – $15,000

Hands of The Carpenter offers hope to single women with dependent children, while providing automobile services, partnering in their efforts to be employed and pursue economic self-sufficiency. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support automotive services for working single mothers, which addresses the often-overlooked barrier of unreliable transportation. Harmony Acres Equestrian Center’s mission is to create a place where people and animals come together for the purpose of healing; to educate the community as to the value of every individual life. Harmony Acres serves financially disadvantaged Mesa County residents struggling with various physical, cognitive, and mental and behavioral challenge and disabilities. The Hive DGO – $7,500

The Hive DGO strives to support journeys in self-discovery by providing a brave and inclusive space for under-resourced and underrepresented youth. The Hive DGO has empowered Durango's youth with internships and jobs, emphasizing mentorship, creativity, and cultural diversity. HomesFund – $10,000

The mission of HomesFund is to build diverse and resilient communities by supporting the development of affordable housing programs and empowering residents with the financial resources and educational tools to achieve homeownership in Southwest Colorado. CHFA’s Direct Effect Award will support their Construction Loan Down Payment Assistance program to assist low-income households with the construction and acquisition of manufactured homes in Southwest Colorado.
