social media campaign generates over $8,000 for colorado nonprofit

Four people smiling and holding a large check(DENVER) – Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) is donating $8,060 to We Don’t Waste, a nonprofit organization based in Denver working to increase food access and protect the planet by rescuing and repurposing food, while educating and advocating to increase food security and decrease food waste.

The donation was the result of Like It Forward, CHFA’s annual social media campaign to benefit Colorado nonprofits whose work aligns with CHFA’s mission to invest in affordable housing and community development. From November 25th through December 13th, CHFA shared a series of social media posts that included information about We Don’t Waste and stories of the impact they’ve made in their community. For each like and share these posts received during the campaign, CHFA donated $5 to the organization.

Consistent access to fresh, healthy food is a foundational element of economic stability and prosperity. According to Colorado Health Institute, an estimated 11 percent of Coloradans lack access to nutritious food. Meanwhile, as much as 40 percent of food in the United States goes unsold or uneaten, according to the USDA.

“We are incredibly grateful to CHFA for their generous support through the Like It Forward campaign,” said Kyle Endres, executive director of We Don’t Waste. “This donation not only helps us recover and distribute nutritious food to those who need it, but it also underscores the power of collaboration in addressing food insecurity and waste. Together, we’re creating a healthier, more sustainable future for our community.”

We Don’t Waste was founded in 2009 by Arlan Preblud. Seeing the amount of food going to waste in the community, Preblud began loading excess food into his vehicle and delivering it to local food banks. Since then, We Don’t Waste has grown substantially, and now operates out of a 30,000 square-foot food recovery facility in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood. In 2023, We Don’t Waste reported that it recovered more than 22 million servings of food.

“This year’s Like It Forward campaign was an opportunity to not only support the work of We Don’t Waste, but to share the story of this great nonprofit and their efforts to reduce food insecurity and food waste in their community,” said Cris White, executive director and CEO of CHFA.

Like it Forward 2024 marks CHFA’s tenth annual social media giving campaign of its kind. The campaign was promoted on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, CHFA’s website, and in various CHFA communications.
