CHFA was honored to photograph and interview individuals across the state who have made an impact in affordable housing and community development, and whose leadership, vision, perseverance, and innovation have changed the lives of Coloradans and their communities for the better. In this gallery, you will find their portraits alongside the stories they shared. You will also read stories of several individuals who have passed away, and whose impact and legacy continue to shape CHFA’s work today.
Aaron Miripol
Aaron Miripol serves as the President and CEO of Urban Land Conservancy (ULC), a nonprofit organization focused on acquiring, developing, and preserving real estate and physical assets to support the needs of underserved communities.
Amy Johnson
Amy Johnson serves as Executive Director for Kit Carson Rural Development, an organization addressing housing and community development needs in rural Eastern Colorado.
Bernadette Cuthair
Bernadette Cuthair serves as Director of Planning and Development for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe (UMUT).
Betsey Martens
Betsey Martens has spent more than four decades working
in affordable housing and community development. She is committed to improving the lives of her neighbors in Boulder County and families across the country.
Betty Ann Dittemore
In 1973, Representative Betty Ann Dittemore of the Colorado General Assembly sponsored House Bill 1111, which established CHFA. She went on to serve as the first and only woman on CHFA’s inaugural Board of Directors.
Craig Archibald
Craig Archibald’s career spanned a variety of roles in affordable housing and economic development, including helping to lead the development of CHFA’s commercial lending programs in the 1980s, and serving as CHFA’s Deputy Executive Director.
Cris White
Cris White’s career spanned more than 35 years at CHFA, and 15 years as Executive Director and CEO. With compassion and integrity, he helped build up CHFA’s reputation as a champion of collaboration.
Dan Hunt
A long-time resident of Animas View Mobile Home Park in Durango, Dan Hunt is an advocate for mobile home communities and a voice for cooperative resident and community ownership of parks across Colorado.
David “Dave” Barba
In his capacity as Colorado’s State Auditor, J. David “Dave” Barba served on CHFA’s Board from 1995 until his death in 2001. He was known by colleagues as a genuine and detail-oriented person who was passionate about CHFA’s mission.
David W. Herlinger
David “Dave” W. Herlinger was CHFA’s longest tenured Executive Director, filling the role from 1977 until his retirement in 2000. His 23 years of leadership were marked by substantial organizational growth and evolution.
Dawn Melgares
Dawn Melgares serves as the Executive Director of the San Luis Valley Coalition, a nonprofit Community Housing Development Organization based in Alamosa that is focused on affordable housing.
Desiree Kameka Galloway
Desiree Kameka Galloway serves as the Director of the Autism Housing Network, and provides consulting, advocacy, and research services to those with an interest in neuro-inclusive housing.
Grace Buckley
As CHFA’s Director of Rental Housing, Grace Buckley helped to pioneer the implementation of the federal Affordable Housing Tax Credit in Colorado, ushering in a new era for the development of affordable housing.
Hassan Latif
In 2012, Hassan Latif founded Second Chance Center, a nonprofit helping formerly incarcerated individuals successfully transition into society.
Jennie Rodgers
A champion for affordable housing efforts across the state, Jennie
Rodgers and Enterprise Community Partners have helped to
make preservation and sustainability a focus for Colorado’s communities.
Jim Roberts
Jim was hired by CHFA as the Director of Legal Operations in 1974, its first year of operation. Jim was CHFA’s fifth employee, working under the leadership of Walter Kane, CHFA’s first Executive Director.
John Parvensky
John Parvensky served as the Executive Director of Colorado Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) from 1985 until his retirement in 2023. The organization experienced tremendous growth during that time as CCH worked to meet the needs of homeless Coloradans.
Julie Brewen
With more than 30 years of experience in affordable housing, Julie Brewen has expanded opportunities for vibrant, sustainable communities in Northern Colorado and has been a champion for affordable housing development on a national scale.
Kevin Marchman
Kevin Marchman has dedicated his career to affordable housing, serving in various leadership roles in Denver as well as nationally. Today, he serves as Executive Director of the National Organization of African Americans in Housing.
Kimball Crangle
Kimball Crangle has played a pivotal role in the development of middle-income and affordable housing in Colorado in her career spanning more than two decades.
Laura Lewis Marchino
A champion for southwest Colorado, Laura Lewis Marchino serves as Executive Director of the Region 9 Economic Development District
where she leads efforts to enhance economic conditions and improve prosperity.
Lucille Echohawk
Lucille Echohawk has dedicated more than 40 years of community service with Colorado’s Native American population. She is the founder of the Native American Housing Circle, a Native-led human service nonprofit in Denver.
Mark Gallegos
Over the course of his nearly three decades at CHFA, Mark Gallegos helped shape CHFA’s history and pave a path for success, often working diligently behind the scenes.
Pastor Kotane Gilbert
Pastor Kotane Gilbert serves as Lead Pastor of Restoration Christian Fellowship (RCF), a faith-based organization in Aurora whose mission leads the organization to invest in unique strategies to serve the community.
Pennfield Tate III
An attorney, former CHFA board member, and longtime public servant, Pennfield Tate III has dedicated his career to working in partnership with colleagues and communities to address some of Colorado’s greatest challenges.
Rodger Hara
A seasoned expert who has held many titles over the course of his career, Rodger Hara has a passion for sharing knowledge, creating opportunities for learning, and mentoring others who share in his passion for Colorado’s affordable housing industry.
Roy Alexander
Roy Alexander served as CHFA’s third Executive Director and CEO. Under Roy’s leadership, CHFA expanded and modernized its programs, increased its statewide impact, and established CHFA’s annual golf tournament.
Steve Shraiberg and Al Blum
Steve Shraiberg and Al Blum serve as principals of Urban, Inc., a real estate and property management firm based in Denver that has been in operation since 1973.
Veronica Barela
Veronica Barela’s leadership of NEWSED Community Development Corporation led to substantial investment in the Santa Fe corridor and surrounding community.
Walter Kane
Walter C. Kane was pivotal to CHFA’s early success and built its strong foundation as its first Executive Director appointed to establish and lead the newly created organization.
William Wade
After a 30-year career in investment banking on Wall Street, William “Bill” Wade has dedicated his time and talent to HomewardBound of the Grand Valley, a nonprofit organization serving individuals experiencing homelessness on the Western Slope.
Zach Neumann and Sam Gilman
Zach Neumann and Sam Gilman are co-founders of the Community Economic Defense Project (CEDP), a nonprofit organization.
